First half is about the blossoming of innocent love of a small girl for the motherless, ugly, badtoothed sinister looking teenager. It was one of those book where you laugh nad you cry and you start caring so much with the characters that you don't want the book to end. I would still recommend it since the story has a slightly different story and some elements are very different but the heart of the story is very much the same. I found it difficult to rate this book and I'm not even sure why. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I can't even describe how I feel about this book, or maybe, it's because it left me hallow in some ways.

For example, why spend so many paragraphs describing the construction crew, and the foreman who liked Motzart? Small vignettes of REF alumni are included between chapters.

This was compared to Sweet Gum Tree which I picked up on a whim after watching sweet home Alabama one quarantine weekend . And I actually felt very unsatisfied at the end of this book. The beginning was sweet, Claire saves Roan despite her families objections. He grows on them like any adopted son and they make a blind, in the heat-of-the-moment decision to kick him out based on a tragic event and past prejudices.

The second part of the book takes place years later when both Claire and Roan are adults. The love they shared as children is stronger than ever and nothing, not even a family secret, will keep them apart. You see Roanie go full circle and finally find a place where he belongs. This was the first booked read by Smith and it surely will not be my last.

A native Georgian, Deborah is a former newspaper editor who turned to novel-writing with great success. Also the whole Josh/Matthew plot just annoyed me more. Another great example of magic in literature. The dead beat dad who can’t take care of his second kid is now a wonderful father with the reveal of his first born. I was really hoping for at least one Maloney to be an asshole because sorry, families are not all this perfect.

We get hues of a rich history and culture back-lighted by a youthful loyalty come romance between the H/h. This book is more about that history and culture than the romance, per se, but I'm only interested in that history and culture as it relates to the romance. I doubt I would have bought into the harshness of the H's character had I not had the background laid out so thoroughly. I tend to gravitate toward romantic comedy which often requires a bit more suspension of disbelief. This book is more "real world" but it's a romance nonetheless. This book had me in tears in certain parts, had me laughing in others, but overall, it just lacked.

I really had a lot to say about this book, so many praises coming to my mind while reading , but now I’m finished and facing the review part, I couldn’t find any word to say but wonderful. Then, it’s just perfect, the characters, I love them.. The secret, the big family, the place, the big revelation were all awesome. It was just perfect for me considering the fact that I don’t really like reading book written in first person point of view.

I also found it strange that Roan stalked Claire for years but never even contacted her once - she'd never rejected him, and I was irritated that he used Matthew as an excuse to stay away from the Maloneys. The second half of the book was only 2 stars for me but the first part was so outstanding that I couldn't rate this less than 4 stars. No one in Dunderry, Georgia--least of all Claire's family--could understand the bond between these two mavericks. But Roan and Claire belonged together...until the dark afternoon when violence and terror overtook them, and Roan disappeared from Claire's life. But Roan Sullivan is about to walk back into their lives.... Like earlier mentioned, a person’s story rarely ends with Family Tree.

But the place may look a little different the next time some of the farther-flung family members return home. The derecho and tornado on Dec. 15, 2021, left its mark on the Hade farmstead. While the house itself received relatively minor damage, several outbuildings and trees were not as fortunate. They probably didn’t look like anything special on those hot, dusty days in the field, but as an architectural feature that pays respect to the farm’s history, they are a treasured part of the home today. The fireplace is wood-burning, with a gas starter, but the family doesn’t use it quite as much as they used to. Wood, for its lovely scent and charm, also has a few drawbacks when the cold air comes in down the chimney at night.

Carolyn finally confides in Jack just as his career is on the line and James and Olivia reaching breaking point. Anna and Gino's romance continues to blossom as they sneak off to spend time together, even though it's clear that something about their secret trysts is playing on Gino's mind.
